Venous disease is often unrecognized, generally for the following reasons: Doctors and patients may believe that “veins are just cosmetic” and they may dismiss odd symptoms, such as aching, cramping, or restless legs as merely a natural part of aging…which is wrong! Patients can actually have vein disease without having any surface veins – they may simply have leg and ankle swelling and sometimes skin color changes resembling eczema with weeping and/or itching. For this reason, it is best to see a vein doctor. It is especially important if you know you have a family history of vein problems, have visible veins yourself or any of the symptoms and risk factors mentioned above.
